How a sand filter system works

The pump draws water from the pool and sends it to the filter. Inside the tank, the filter media traps suspended impurities before the water returns to the pool through the return inlets.

On models that include it, the pump prefilter catches leaves and larger debris, helping to protect the hydraulic part of the pump.

Filtration works alongside water treatment: it does not replace disinfection and chemical parameter control.

How to choose the pool filter system

The choice should not be based only on the pump power in HP or CV. It is important to consider the flow rate of the filter system, the characteristics of the filter and the actual installation conditions.

• Pool volume in m³ and expected recirculation times.
• Filtration flow rate in m³/h.
• Filter diameter and filtration surface.
• Distance and height difference between filter system and pool.
• Pipe diameter, length and routing.
• Type and size of connections.
• Presence of heat pumps, electrolyzers or other equipment.
• Available space for installation and maintenance.

A more powerful pump does not automatically mean better filtration. Pump, filter and hydraulic circuit must be sized consistently.

Flow rate and pool volume

The flow rate, expressed in m³/h, indicates the volume of water moved in one hour. The actual flow rate also depends on the resistance of the circuit, the connected equipment and the cleanliness of the filter.

When a indicative pool volume is shown on the product page, it is important to also consider the recirculation time used to determine it and the system conditions.

The time for a single recirculation does not necessarily match the total daily operating time, which must be adapted to the conditions of the pool.

Filter systems for above-ground and inground pools

Filter systems can be used on above-ground or inground pools when the selected model is compatible with the relevant installation.

Before purchase, check flow rate, connections, pump position in relation to the water level and the manufacturer’s instructions. On existing systems it is also important to check compatibility with already installed pipes and equipment.

Sand and filter media

Each filter requires a specific quantity and grain size of filter media. These data must be respected for correct system operation.

The use of filter glass or other alternatives to sand must be verified according to the indications of the filter and media manufacturers.

Filter media is not always included. Check the product page to know what is included in the package and the required media load.

Multiport valve and filter maintenance

On models equipped with a multiport valve, the available positions allow you to manage filtration and maintenance operations such as backwash and rinse. Functions vary depending on the installed valve.

The pressure gauge, when present, allows the pressure in the filter to be monitored. Cleaning the prefilter and backwashing must be performed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Always switch off the pump before changing the position of the selector valve.

Compatibility with saltwater pools

For pools equipped with salt electrolysis, check the compatibility of the entire filter system, including pump, filter and all components in contact with water.

Compatibility and any salinity limits depend on the model: refer to the technical data sheet and the manufacturer’s manual.

Replacing an existing filter system

To replace an old filter system, it is not enough to compare only the pump power. You must check flow rate, filter size, connections, overall dimensions and characteristics of the hydraulic circuit.
